Abstract
The participation of the Municipality of Rafina-Pikermi in the European program CLIMAAX marks a critical step toward strengthening local resilience to climate change impacts. Triggered by the tragic experience of the 2018 wildfire in Mati, the Municipality is implementing the RAFRVA – Rafina Risk and Vulnerability Assessment to scientifically assess climate risks and local vulnerabilities.
The initiative aims to:
- Enhance spatial and climate planning through updated risk assessments,
- Develop targeted adaptation strategies,
- Inform and engage citizens in climate resilience actions.
Eastern Attica faces long-standing challenges in spatial planning, civil protection, and land management. CLIMAAX offers vital financial and technical support, promotes cross-sectoral collaboration, and aligns local actions with new European standards for climate risk governance.
Through the RAFRVA study, high-risk areas will be identified, infrastructure and population vulnerability will be assessed, and advanced adaptation techniques will be developed. Citizen education and participation are key pillars, reinforcing both awareness and community-based resilience.
